From signing the contract to a running system typically takes two to four months – the installation itself only two to four working days. Your active effort is concentrated at the beginning: checking the roof, comparing quotes, deciding. After that, a good specialist company will largely take over the paperwork – with one exception, which belongs before construction begins. (As of: July 2026)

The path in three minutes
Your part is at the beginning. The first three stages you need to do yourself – together a few hours: checking your own roof (ten minutes on sonnendach.ch, plus the question of what consumers will be added), getting quotes from two to three regional specialist companies with the same key data, and making the decision in one evening. From the signature onwards, the work changes sides. Notification procedure with the municipality, connection request to the grid operator, scheduling with scaffolding and installation team: This is the specialist company's business and runs in parallel in the background over weeks. The installation itself is the shortest part of the whole project – two to four working days on the roof, your presence is not necessary. After that, the grid operator changes the measurement, the independent inspection checks the installation, and the system goes onto the grid.
Where the time really goes: rarely on the technology, almost always at the interfaces – deadlines of the grid operator, scaffolding coordination, in core zones the clarification with the municipality. That is why two to four months from the signature to the running system is the realistic timeframe, even if work on the roof only takes days.
The one exception in the paperwork that is yours: If your municipality pays an incentive contribution, this application must be submitted before construction begins – the only step in the whole process that cannot be made up for later. The one-off feed-in incentive of the federal government, on the other hand, is applied for in a relaxed manner after commissioning, usually by the specialist company; you are left with the tax folder at the end. Finally, the handover moment: This includes system documentation, introduction to monitoring and the warranty documents. A specialist company that hands over these three things without being asked also has the rest of the path under control.

In brief
How long does it take from the quote to the running system? From signature to the system on the grid typically two to four months – depending on the season, municipality and grid operator. The installation itself only takes two to four working days; the rest is planning, registrations and deadlines in the background.
Do I need a building permit? For most roof systems, the simpler notification procedure with the municipality is sufficient – the specialist company takes care of this. It is different in core zones and for protected objects: there a permit is required, and the clarification takes correspondingly longer. The specialist company knows what applies after a look at the zone.
Do I have to be at home during the installation? No – access to the meter box and utility room is sufficient. Your presence is useful at the handover at the end: there you receive documentation, monitoring instruction and warranty documents, and there you ask the questions that have accumulated during the installation.
