Frequently asked questions

What does a 10 kWp solar system with battery storage cost in Zurich?

As a guideline price, CHF 28,000 to 39,000 before incentives for 10 kWp plus around 10 kWh of storage, of which CHF 8,000 to 12,000 is for the battery (as of July 2026). Since 1 August 2026 the City of Zurich pays a CHF 5,000 base contribution plus CHF 450 per kWp (total incentive including the federal contribution) and now also subsidises battery storage. The binding figure is the quote after a site visit.

Can I deduct a solar system in Zurich from my taxes?

Yes — in the Canton of Zurich, the investment in a solar system on an existing building is deductible from taxable income, for both cantonal and federal tax, minus any incentives received. The one-off feed-in incentive is not taxed separately, but reduces the deductible costs; it must still be declared. Time window: the deduction applies unchanged up to and including tax period 2028; from 2029 it lapses for federal tax with the abolition of the notional rental value (Eigenmietwert).

Does photovoltaics pay off in Zurich?

In most cases yes — especially if a good share of the solar power is used in your own home: your own electricity is cheaper than grid electricity, plus there’s the one-off incentive, the City of Zurich or municipal subsidy, and the tax deduction. How quickly the investment pays for itself depends on consumption, roof, electricity price and feed-in tariff — we calculate this for you concretely before the quote.

Is the initial consultation free and non-binding?

Yes. We discuss your starting point, energy needs and goals free of charge and without obligation. You then receive an initial assessment of which solution makes sense for your building.

Is my roof suitable for a solar system?

More roofs are suitable than many people think — including east-west roofs and flat roofs. What matters is shading, usable area and the condition of the roof, rather than a perfect south orientation. During the initial consultation we assess your roof and tell you honestly what’s possible.

Do I need planning permission for a solar system?

For typical roof-mounted systems, a simple notification is sufficient in most municipalities. Full planning permission is mainly required in heritage or protected zones, or for listed buildings. We clarify the requirements for your address and prepare the documents.

How does a solar project with ecoEn work?

Solar systems in Zurich and the surrounding area

Our focus is the City of Zurich, Winterthur and the whole Canton of Zurich — alongside that, we also plan and install in the neighbouring cantons. Is your project a bit further out? We’re happy to review it individually. In the Canton of Zurich, 32,829 solar systems are currently in operation — per capita, Zurich ranks only 24th of 26 cantons, so there’s still plenty of free roof space (Swissolar, as of August 2026).

What to expect in Zurich: turnkey systems at a guideline price of CHF 2,100 to 2,700 per kWp (as of July 2026); in the City of Zurich, since 1 August 2026, with a CHF 5,000 base contribution plus CHF 450 per kWp incentive — for the first time also for battery storage.

Why the system alone is rarely enough

Solar power is generated around midday — but used in the morning and evening. That’s the central mismatch of every photovoltaic system. How well you close that gap determines your return more than any module datasheet.

The share of production you use in the same moment is your self-consumption rate. Everything above that goes to the grid as surplus and is remunerated considerably lower than what you pay for grid electricity in the evening. Self-consumed solar power is worth roughly two to four times as much as exported power. That’s exactly why we plan battery storage, a heat pump and EV charging in from the start: they shift consumption into the sunshine hours and grow the “self-consumed” share. The first steps towards this cost nothing — it’s the order of things in daily life, not new technology.

The technology is related, but the questions beforehand aren’t: for a single-family home it’s about self-consumption, for an apartment building it’s first about ownership structure, for a business it’s about the daytime load profile. This overview shows where your project stands.
