The Canton of Aargau pays no separate photovoltaic incentive of its own – the cantonal programme focuses on the building envelope and heating replacement. Three sources count for your solar system: the federal one-off feed-in incentive (currently around CHF 360 per kWp), additional contributions from individual municipalities, and the tax deduction – since 2026 supplemented by the new net principle for taxing fed-in electricity. (As of: July 2026)
Key points in brief
- Direct cantonal PV contributions: none in Aargau – as in most cantons, the money flows into heat and the building envelope.
- Curious but true: the canton subsidises thermal solar collectors, but not photovoltaics – the base PV incentive is a federal matter (EIV).
- Individual Aargau municipalities and utilities pay additional contributions – budget-limited, checkable by postcode via energiefranken.ch.
- New for tax purposes since 1 January 2026: the net principle applies to feed-in income – the cost of purchased electricity may be deducted from the income.
- Golden rule for municipal programmes: submit the application before construction starts.

What does the federal government pay – regardless of canton and municipality?
As everywhere, the base in Aargau is the one-off feed-in incentive (EIV) via Pronovo, currently around CHF 360 per kWp for systems up to 30 kWp. For the typical 10 kWp system on a single-family home, that's around CHF 3,600. The EIV is neither budget-limited nor location-dependent – anyone who meets the requirements and submits the application cleanly receives it.
As of July 2026; Pronovo's current rates apply.
Does the Canton of Aargau subsidise photovoltaics directly?
No. The cantonal incentive programme supports energy consultations, renovation of the building envelope, wood heating, heat pumps, connections to heating networks – and thermal solar collectors for hot water. Photovoltaics does not appear on the list. At first glance this seems contradictory, but it follows the nationwide division of labour: the federal government pays the base PV incentive via the EIV, and cantons deploy their funds where the federal government doesn't subsidise.
There is, however, an important exception – and it's often overlooked: anyone who renovates the roof at the same time does receive money from the canton that's tied to the solar system. More on that in the next section.
A quirk of the Aargau programme worth noting: in areas with heating networks, heat pumps are only subsidised in exceptional cases – relevant if you want to combine a solar system and heating replacement. For the heating part, the application runs via the canton's building programme portal.

Combining roof renovation and a solar system: here the canton does pay after all
The bonus doesn't sit in the PV chapter but with the building envelope. Anyone who has thermal insulation subsidised and installs a photovoltaic system at the same time receives a surcharge per square metre – and it's substantial:
| Measure | Condition | Incentive contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Roof insulation (as well as walls and floor against the ground) | U-value ≤ 0.20 W/(m²·K) | CHF 40 per m² |
| Wall insulation against outdoor climate | U-value ≤ 0.20 W/(m²·K) | CHF 60 per m² |
| Bonus for simultaneous PV installation: system on a flat, green roof | + CHF 20 per m² | |
| Bonus: pitched roof with an on-roof system | + CHF 30 per m² | |
| Bonus: pitched roof with an in-roof system, or a façade system | + CHF 100 per m² | |
| Full-renovation bonus | at least 90% of the main surfaces insulated against outdoor climate | + CHF 60 per m² |
Canton of Aargau incentive programme, 05/2026 edition (summary and brochure, ag.ch); as of: September 2026. The current incentive conditions and the individual approval are decisive.
The difference between on-roof and in-roof is not a detail here: for the roof-integrated solution, the canton pays more than triple the bonus – because it replaces the roof skin rather than just sitting on it. If the roof needs to come off anyway, this noticeably shifts the calculation between the two construction methods: In-roof or on-roof? · In-roof solar system
The conditions that applications fail on:
- The incentive application must be submitted before construction starts – anyone who builds first loses the contribution entirely.
- Eligible are buildings with a building permit year before 2000, and only components that were already heated in their original state.
- The U-value improvement must be at least 0.07 W/(m²·K).
- From CHF 10,000 of incentive contribution per application, a GEAK Plus is mandatory (the canton pays CHF 1,000 towards it for single- and two-family homes).
- Contributions under CHF 2,000 are not paid out.
Who does this – roof and solar system in one process?
This is exactly where the problem lies in practice: roofers, electricians and solar installers often work one after another instead of together, and the incentive application falls between the cracks. What makes sense is a single planning process in which insulation thickness, substructure, module array and application deadlines are set together – before the first hand touches the roof.
We plan and install the solar part in eastern Aargau from Zurich and coordinate it with your roofer; we submit the incentive application for the system. For the insulation part, the application runs via the canton's building programme portal. What needs to be considered technically when roof and system interact: Roof renovation and photovoltaics.
Which municipalities pay extra?
At the municipal level things look friendlier – but less transparent. A number of Aargau municipalities and regional utilities run their own programmes for photovoltaics, some also for battery storage. We deliberately avoid a table of franc amounts here: programmes get adjusted, paused or exhausted mid-year, and nothing goes out of date faster than such a list.
The reliable route: enter your postcode on energiefranken.ch – the platform shows, up to date, all programmes from municipality, canton and utility for your address. Two quirks of municipal programmes also apply in Aargau: they are budget-limited (an empty annual pot means no contribution, however eligible the application), and they almost always require the application before construction starts.
Taxes in Aargau: the deduction plus the new net principle
For tax purposes, Aargau is a solid location for solar owners – for two reasons.
First, the classic investment deduction: investments in renewable energy on existing buildings can be deducted from taxable income. What this brings depends on your marginal tax rate; for middle and higher incomes, the effect in many cases exceeds any municipal top-up contribution. For new construction, on the other hand, the system counts as construction costs – no deduction. Basics and examples: Tax deduction for solar systems.
Second, the net principle, new since 1 January 2026: income from electricity feed-in is generally taxable income. Until now, gross income was the basis; now, the cost of your own electricity purchases may be deducted from feed-in income. So only what remains net is taxed – for most single-family-home systems this means little to nothing. An unspectacular administrative decision with a noticeable effect.
As of: July 2026; the current guidance and practice of the Cantonal Tax Office Aargau are decisive.
Planning a solar system in Aargau: cost guideline and next steps
Anyone who has clarified the incentive question usually wants to know right away what the system costs and who builds it. As a guideline, a turnkey solar system for a single-family home costs CHF 2,100–2,700 per kWp (as of: July 2026; larger systems are lower per kWp). For feed-in, in AEW's grid you have the choice in 2026 between the fixed price of 8.2 Rp./kWh including the guarantee of origin and the quarterly averaged reference market price – details in the AEW tariff guide. We plan and install in eastern Aargau from Zurich, with short distances for site visits and service; a documented reference is in Schneisingen (36.45 kWp, see projects). How to clarify your situation in 3 steps
1. Enter your postcode on energiefranken.ch – shows all active programmes for your address. 2. Check conditions and budget status – in particular: application before construction starts? Pot still funded? 3. Follow the order: municipal application (if any) → registration with the grid operator → construction → commissioning → Pronovo application → deduction in your next tax return.
Or skip the research: with every ecoEn quote, clarifying the complete incentive situation at your location is standard – including taking over the applications.
In Aargau we regularly see the same aha moment as in the Canton of Zurich: «the canton pays nothing, so it's not worth it here.» That calculation doesn't hold up. EIV plus tax deduction regularly add up, for a typical 10 kWp system, to a total effect in the high four to five figures – just spread across two inconspicuous channels instead of one incentive notice with a cantonal crest. And where a municipality pays extra, the calendar often decides: anyone submitting their application in spring is more likely to hit a funded pot than in November.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a cantonal PV incentive in Aargau in 2026?
No. The cantonal programme subsidises the building envelope, heating replacement and thermal solar collectors – photovoltaics runs via the federal one-off feed-in incentive, any municipal contributions, and the tax deduction.
How do I find out what my municipality pays?
Enter your postcode on energiefranken.ch – the platform lists all active programmes. Also check your electricity utility's website; some utilities run their own campaigns.
What does the new net principle specifically mean for me?
Since 1 January 2026, in Aargau you may deduct the cost of your electricity purchases from your feed-in income; only the net surplus is taxable. For typical single-family-home systems, this often leaves no taxable amount at all. The Cantonal Tax Office's guidance is decisive.
What incentives are there for roof renovations in Canton Aargau?
It's the insulation that's subsidised, not the re-roofing alone: CHF 40 per m² of insulated roof area (U-value ≤ 0.20 W/(m²·K)), plus CHF 60 per m² for a near-fully insulated envelope. If a solar system goes onto the roof at the same time, there's a surcharge – on a pitched roof, CHF 30 per m² for on-roof and CHF 100 per m² for in-roof, on a green flat roof CHF 20 per m². The application must be submitted before construction starts, and the building must have a building permit from before 2000.
Which companies help with roof renovation and incentives in Aargau?
The roof work and insulation are done by the roofer or timber builder, and the application for the insulation part runs via the canton's building programme portal. We plan and install the solar part in eastern Aargau from Zurich, submit the documents for the system, and coordinate timing and scaffolding with your roofer.
Does Canton Aargau subsidise battery storage?
Not at cantonal level. Individual municipalities or utilities occasionally have battery programmes – the postcode check on energiefranken.ch shows this.
What does AEW pay for fed-in solar power?
AEW Energie AG publishes its feed-in remuneration annually; we cover rates and composition in the feed-in tariff guide AEW. Tariffs are adjusted periodically – check your grid operator's current publication.
