The Fronius Symo GEN24 Plus is a three-phase hybrid inverter in performance classes from 3 to 10 kW, which brings together solar system and battery storage in one device. Two emergency power variants are built-in or retrofittable: the PV Point (a socket with up to 3 kW, even without battery) and the Full Backup for the whole house (from 6 kW, with battery and switching component). The BYD Battery-Box Premium and the in-house Fronius Reserva are compatible as batteries. We install the GEN24 Plus in the Zurich region – independent of manufacturers, meaning only where it is the best choice. (As of: September 2026)

What differentiates the GEN24 Plus from the GEN24?
Both devices are identical in construction – the difference lies in the activation. The GEN24 is a pure solar inverter; the GEN24 Plus has the hybrid function activated and can charge and discharge a battery storage on the DC side. Those who start without a battery today but want one later can upgrade the GEN24 to the Plus with a licence – without changing the device. This is one of the reasons why we almost always plan the GEN24 in the Plus version or at least battery-ready for Fronius systems. In Switzerland, as a provider, Fronius has «strongly gained in presence» according to the Swissolar battery monitor 2026 – mainly because the GEN24 Plus bundles battery and emergency power in one device and works together with open battery systems (As of: September 2026).

Who is the GEN24 Plus suitable for – and who not?
Suitable:
- Single-family home with desire for a battery now or later: hybrid, licence upgrade, open choice of battery.
- Emergency power in two stages – those who only want to secure router, fridge and light get away cheaply with the PV Point; those who want to continue to operate the house three-phase plan Full Backup.
- Anyone who wants to control hot water (Ohmpilot) and e-car (Wattpilot) from an app without a separate energy manager.
Less suitable:
- Systems over 10 kWp with high battery requirement or apartment buildings: there it will be a Verto Plus or a system like FENECON Home 20/30.
- Anyone who prefers the Huawei ecosystem (LUNA2000, SCharger) – the GEN24 Plus cannot charge a LUNA2000.
- Very small systems under 3 kWp, for which a single-phase Primo GEN24 Plus is sufficient.
What does a GEN24 Plus cost – and is it worthwhile?
We deliberately do not mention a catalogue price: the inverter is one item in the overall system, and the extra cost of a hybrid device compared to a pure solar inverter is manageable if a battery is planned – it saves the second inverter. The backup power levels cost differently: PV Point is included in the device (socket and wiring are added), Full Backup requires a battery, backup switching and adapted house distribution – this is a separate item in the quote.

What alternatives are there to the GEN24 Plus?
- Huawei SUN2000 (MAP0 series) with LUNA2000 – closed ecosystem, three-phase backup power via SmartGuard.
- Kostal Plenticore – also hybrid, open for BYD; in use by us in apartment buildings (Piko CI).
- SMA Sunny Tripower Smart Energy – hybrid with BYD release; the weighing up is provided by Fronius or SMA.
- SolarEdge – optimiser system for heavily shaded roofs, see Huawei or SolarEdge.

The GEN24 Plus is our standard answer when a household «perhaps later a battery» wants. We have seen too many systems where a second inverter became necessary for the retrofit battery – more expensive and less attractive than building hybrid from the start. For backup power, we advise an honest assessment: the PV Point is sufficient for the hours that realistically fail in Switzerland; we plan Full Backup where the heat pump or home office must continue to run and the battery is correspondingly large. And: the GEN24 has a fan. In the basement this bothers no one – we do not hang it next to the bedroom.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Fronius GEN24 Plus backup power capable?
Yes, in two stages. The PV Point is included in every GEN24 Plus: a socket with up to 3 kW, which is supplied from the solar system or battery in the event of a grid failure. For the entire house there is Full Backup (classes 6 to 10 kW): three-phase, with battery and a backup switching in the house connection. Both stages must be taken into account in the electrical planning.
Is the Fronius GEN24 black start capable?
With battery and Full Backup equipment yes: the system builds its own island grid after a grid failure and recharges the battery from the solar system during the day. Without a battery, the PV Point only delivers as long as the sun is shining. Details on the distinction are explained in the article Backup power or replacement power.
Can I connect a BYD battery to a Fronius GEN24?
Yes. The BYD Battery-Box Premium HVS and HVM is released for the GEN24 Plus – one of the most common combinations in Switzerland. The decisive factor is the current Fronius compatibility list with model series and firmware versions. Alternatively, the in-house Fronius Reserva with modules of 3.15 kWh has been available since 2024.
What is the difference between Fronius GEN24 and GEN24 Plus?
The hardware is identical; the Plus has the hybrid function for battery storage unlocked. A GEN24 can later be upgraded to a Plus via licence. Both have PV Point; Full Backup and battery operation are only available with Plus.
How many strings fit on the Fronius GEN24?
The Symo GEN24 Plus has two independent MPP trackers; depending on the performance class, several strings can be connected so that two roof areas with different orientations are routed separately. With more sub-areas or heavy shading, we combine optimisers or choose a different concept – see Power optimiser.
Verto Plus or GEN24 Plus – which is a better fit?
The GEN24 Plus covers single-family homes up to 10 kW; the Verto Plus is the larger hybrid class from 15 to 33 kW for apartment buildings, self-consumption communities (ZEV) and businesses. The decisive factors are system size, battery performance and whether the house needs three-phase backup power.
