Short answer

The Canton of Zurich pays no blanket photovoltaic incentive of its own – cantonal funds go primarily into heating replacement and building renovation. For your solar system, three sources count in the canton: the federal one-off feed-in incentive (currently around CHF 360 per kWp), additional contributions from individual municipalities and municipal utilities, and the full tax deduction of the investment. Key points in brief

  • Direct cantonal contributions to PV: none in the Canton of Zurich – that's not a disadvantage of the location, but common practice throughout Switzerland.
  • The action is at municipal level: individual cities and utilities pay additional contributions – the programmes are budgeted and change constantly.
  • The tax deduction is generous in Zurich: investments in existing buildings are deductible for both cantonal and federal tax.
  • energiefranken.ch provides postcode-specific information – or our consultation, which clarifies the incentive situation as standard.
  • Golden rule: submit municipal applications before construction starts.

Anyone searching for «Canton of Zurich incentive programme» usually doesn't mean a single programme, but the question: what is there money for here at all? The overview of the pots relevant to homeowners:

Guideline values according to the Canton of Zurich 2026 incentive programme (version 1 January 2026) and the respective programme conditions; as of September 2026. The cantonal contribution is limited to 50 percent of the relevant investment costs. The current conditions and the individual commitment apply.

The one rule that applies to all these pots: the application must be submitted before construction starts – for heat pumps, installation counts as the start of construction, for ground probes the drilling. Anyone who builds first and asks later loses the contribution; that's the most common and most expensive mistake in the whole process.

What does the federal government pay – regardless of the municipality?

The basis is the same everywhere in the canton: the one-off feed-in incentive (EIV) via Pronovo, currently around CHF 360 per kWp for systems up to 30 kWp. For a typical 10 kWp system on a single-family home, that's around CHF 3,600. This money doesn't depend on location and isn't budgeted – anyone who meets the requirements and submits the application properly receives it.

As of July 2026; Pronovo's current rates apply.

Why doesn't the Canton of Zurich pay anything towards photovoltaics?

Because it deliberately uses its incentive funds differently: the cantonal incentive programme focuses on heating replacement (heat pumps, connection to heating networks) and the building envelope – where the federal government pays no one-off incentive. In practice, this means for homeowners: anyone who combines a solar system with a heating replacement draws from both pots – EIV for the PV, cantonal contributions for the heat pump. Details on the heating part: Heat pump incentives in the Canton of Zurich and The Buildings Programme.

There is one exception in the small print, though: anyone who insulates the roof or facade and at the same time installs a PV system on the renovated areas receives an additional CHF 20/m² of module area from the canton on top of the insulation contribution of CHF 40/m² (2026 incentive programme). If a roof renovation is due anyway, planning solar at the same time pays off twice.

Which municipalities pay extra?

This is where it gets interesting – and confusing. The programmes we continuously check for our customers in the canton (municipal regulations plus energiefranken.ch, as of September 2026):

As of September 2026 – deliberately without franc amounts here: municipal programmes are adjusted, paused or exhausted. You'll find the current amounts and conditions with dates on the linked municipal pages; the publication of your municipality or utility applies, and energiefranken.ch provides the up-to-date overview with your postcode.

Two peculiarities of municipal programmes you need to know: they are budgeted – once the annual pot is empty, there's nothing more, no matter how justified the application. And they almost always require the application before construction starts. Anyone who builds first and asks later has lost out in most municipalities (the most common mistakes).

Municipal news: what has changed recently

Because municipal programmes are continuously adjusted, we list the changes here with dates – newest at the top:

  • 1 August 2026 – City of Zurich: new rates with a higher base contribution and tiered kWp contributions; battery storage is also subsidised for the first time. Details: City of Zurich incentives.
  • 1 January 2026 – Küsnacht: new incentive regulations «Climate, Energy and Green Space 2026–2029» with a framework credit of CHF 2 million. Only roof-integrated and facade systems (per MWh of annual yield) and lithium-free storage are now subsidised; classic on-roof systems no longer receive a contribution. The previous programme was exhausted in October 2024. Details: Solar panels Küsnacht.
  • 1 January 2026 – Kloten (ibk): ibk now remunerates the guarantee of origin for systems under 100 kW at 1.62 Rp./kWh; the city's PV programme continues after the municipal council increased the credit by CHF 1.1 million on 2 September 2025. Details: Solar panels Kloten.
  • 2026 – Stäfa: the municipality provides CHF 200,000 per year for the energy incentive programme – if you want the 50% surcharge on the one-off incentive, apply early in the year. Details: Solar panels Stäfa.
  • 1 January 2025 – Meilen: ecology fund guidelines in force, with contributions for PV on existing buildings and for battery storage. Details: Solar panels Meilen.
  • No change – Zollikon and Dübendorf: still no municipal PV programme; what remains is the one-off incentive, the tax deduction and the cantonal additional contribution for simultaneous insulation.

The tax deduction: Zurich's strongest argument

In the Canton of Zurich, you can deduct investments in renewable energy on existing buildings from your taxable income – for both cantonal and federal tax. The system costs are deductible; the one-off feed-in incentive received must be taken into account correctly. What this brings in concrete terms depends on your marginal tax rate – for middle and higher incomes, the effect is substantial and in many cases exceeds any municipal additional contribution.

Important distinction: for a new build, the system counts as part of the building costs for tax purposes – no deduction. And a time window: with the abolition of the imputed rental value as of 1 January 2029, the deduction for direct federal tax no longer applies; up to and including the 2028 tax period it applies unchanged, and at cantonal level afterwards only if Zurich continues it temporarily. Details with examples: Tax deduction for solar systems.

How to clarify your situation in 3 steps

1. Enter your postcode on energiefranken.ch – shows all programmes of the municipality, canton and utility for your address. 2. Read deadlines and conditions – in particular: application before construction? Budget still available? 3. Keep to the order: municipal application (if any) → notification procedure → construction → commissioning → Pronovo application → tax deduction in your next return.

Or skip the research: with every ecoEn quote, clarifying the complete incentive situation at your location is standard – including taking over the applications.

From practice

The misunderstanding we encounter most often in the Canton of Zurich: "The canton pays nothing, so there's no incentive." In fact, for a typical 10 kWp system, the EIV plus tax deduction regularly add up to a five-figure overall effect – it's just spread over two unspectacular channels instead of one prominent incentive decision. And where a municipality pays extra, timing is decisive: we've seen programmes exhausted in autumn while the neighbouring project still benefited in spring.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a cantonal PV incentive in Zurich in 2026?

No, not a blanket one. The canton primarily subsidises heating replacement and the building envelope; for PV, the federal government (EIV), the municipality and the tax deduction count.

How do I find out what my municipality pays?

Enter your postcode on energiefranken.ch – the platform lists all active programmes. Also check your electricity utility's website; some utilities run their own campaigns.

Can I combine a municipal contribution, the EIV and the tax deduction?

Yes – that's the normal case and explicitly permitted. Contributions received must be correctly taken into account in the deductible costs or in the tax return.

Does the Canton of Zurich subsidise battery storage?

Not at cantonal level; occasionally, municipalities or utilities have storage programmes. The overview: Battery storage incentives.

What applies specifically in the City of Zurich?

The city has its own additional contributions for solar systems via ewz – we cover the rates and conditions, continuously updated, in the City of Zurich guide.
